Well he came out a loser all round in the Oscars and elsewhere (although I guess he did get one award in the UK) so I suppose he had to get drunk to get through the disappointment, or whatever. He had some not- very-good moments in Brokeback, compared to Ledger's marvelous performance, and I would guess Hollywood thinks he is a bit pampered and unfairly advantaged and a bit of a narcissist; thus ignoring him would be a good way to set him back a peg.
